I keep on getting "Error 630: The Modem is Not Responding" when I try to connect.  What could the problem be?

There are a couple possibilities for this problem as well.

1) The computer just needs to be shutdown and restart.  When weird things happen with a computer, it is a good rule of thumb to just turn the computer completely off.  After about 30 seconds or so, turn it back on and let it boot up from scratch.

2) The modem drivers are not installed correctly.  The modem drivers are software that identify the modem to Windows and typically tell Windows how to install it on your computer.  On cheaper software based modems they are even more then that.  They tell the modem how to do its job.  If the drivers are not installed correctly, Windows doesn't know what to do with your modem and this error occurs.  You should try to reinstall your modem drivers and if that doesn't work, contact your computer's tech support.

3) Somebody tried to put an Initialization String into your modem settings that your modem did not recognize.  An Initialization String (or "init string" for short) is an extra command that is entered into your Modem Settings by a technician to try to improve modem performance.  These "init strings" are not universal for all modems.  If one is put in that doesn't work, your modem will generate this error.  The fix is just to remove the init string and to do a Restart of your computer.

4) The modem has ceased to function.  If the modem has been hit by a surge of electricity or if for some other reason the modem itself just stops working properly.  This error can occur.  The first thing that you can try to do is to reinstall your modem drivers.  If this fails to solve the problem, you will need to contact your computer's tech support as you likely need to purchase a new modem at this point.
